Hello everybody,
I just subscribed to the Harmonica Academy about a week ago and I just finished Freshman year. How long do you think sophomore, junior and senior year will take?
I can play single notes pretty good and I know how to bend.

Janine, take your time & enjoy the course. Gunsmoke is right about the basics & the timing. The thing is not to become disheartened because it's a case of the more you know the more you find there is still to learn. But then that's with nearly everything.

Hi Janine,

I'm gonna chime in here just because it's been my goal from the beginning to finish THIS COURSE!

Freshman and Sophmore years Blues and Tunes lessons
will go relatively quick for you.
Maybe a year give or take if you pracitce everyday.
Junior year...Ahhhh..the junior year in tunes took me 1 full year to finish.
Blues a lot less, maybe 6 months.

Senior year...AHEM!! That's where I'm at right now.

I take these lessons in order starting with tunes and follow with blues.
I'm on lesson 8 in tunes right now. My best estimate would be,
only because I stopped keeping track is a little over a year in the
tunes portion of the senior year.

Blues senior year just by taking a glance at it I would say
that would be a year..Remember practicing daily.

If you add that all up it's a little over 4 years.

But that's where the fun starts. The final exam I kind of look at that
as a graduate course. It'll probably take you a good year to get that done.
Depending upon how well and how much time you put into all the lessons.

So my best guess is between 5 plus years at least.

Every one is different obviously, I'm just talking about my self and my journey
through here so far.

Don't get discouraged about how long it takes you might go quicker.

Remember what Christine says "the joy is in the journey" it really is a lot of fun.

Also remember what Tony has said once you finish you've just begun. The Journey begins.

Have fun. Be active on the forum. Record yourself and post on the forum so we can all help you.

I still have a lot of trouble with key's and what key to play..

There's a lot of people here willing to help you on your path through Harmonica College.

And who knows maybe you'll be the first to graduate. Yes as far as I know there
hasn't been a graduate yet.

Good luck and welcome to the harmonica universe!

Harp On!!

Ok Joe you are the exemplary student. You follow the book. You do it right & good on you. I wish I had your dogged determination.

I have been in this building as long as Joe. I started out well ahead but now with studies Joe is way ahead of me on this course. I'm in no hurry.

Everyone is different. I'm happy where I'm at, but of course always would like to improve and it never happens fast enough.

This course for its type is amongst the best, if not the best on the net. Still it's up to the student to soak up the information, practice, and learn. Limited though to no feedback other than from fellow journeymen on the forum. If you wanted a course with feedback they are available, are probably very good, but are also quite expensive.

In reality I think with the harmonica, like a lot of skills, you teach yourself. You seek out the core material like this excellent course & supplement it with recommended books, CDs, free Youtube lessons (some good, some so so). However face to face or skype instruction from a good player should come into the mix. In the end you play in your way, in your style & what you want to play.

Were I just commencing my journey & knowing what I now know I would still enrol & follow the academy course. Very early on I would seek out valuable face to face or a skype lesson to cover the basics eg breathing correctly & embouchure. Whatever you learn yourself will not be right if these basics are not in place. Sight unseen it is difficult for others to sometimes comment but getting the basics wrong means you are off to a bad start. Correcting bad habits becomes difficult the longer you live with them. I know!

Practice makes perfect. Not so. Perfect practice makes perfect. The difference being that you must always work on correcting weaknesses. I don't believe that we can always rely on reading, listening & practice as a means of correcting weaknesses. If you don't realise you have a weakness it is unlikely that the forum, however helpful it may be, can constructively set you right.

A skype lesson which I would best describe as 'coaching' ( because most lessons you need to follow are here at HA)would be my aim eg every quarter. My coach would need to understand my likes and what I want to achieve. My coach would need to listen to what /how I played and tell me where & what needs fixing. I would also have a prepared list of questions for my coach re what I want to learn.

How long? Get to the stage of being an advanced beginner and the question still remains unanswered. The main objective is to have fun and really enjoy it.

Thanks Heather! I'm obsessed with big, chunky knits. Hopefully one of these days my knitting skills will improve so I can make one myself, but until then I have an incredibly talented grandma to thank. xo
